Hearding Cats Collective is pleased to present PanLux, a screening of contemporary video and non-video forms of variable light.

PanLux represents the current achievements of artists exploring the layers and hierarchies of electronic media. The program includes commissions from ten local, national, and international artists working in video synthesis, 3D animation, coding and generative art, circuit design, and non-format moving light.

With a focus on differentiating media from technology, PanLux considers the wide spectrum of modern and historic electronic techniques available to produce abstract forms, patterns, and geometries of moving light.

By manipulating or creating media at a fundamental level, such as an electronic transistor or a line of core code, new relationships emerge between content and form that allow the artist to control the process of creativity with clarity and understanding. Likewise, artistic collaborations with media toolmakers and interface designers yield a fascinating process of content creation. It is these diverse and carefully considered levels of media exploration that are today producing an exciting stylistic range of electronic art.

Benefiting from the rich history of electronic circuit design, artists are no longer constrained by a limited video format developed for commercial purposes. PanLuxillustrates how today’s electronic media artists are free to select a practice that is not subject to appropriating the same technologies generated by the machine of industry. Instead, today’s media artists can select from elegant technologies of the past chosen for a specific aesthetic detail to more open ended systems utilized for their computational power and control.

The artists presented in this screening range from those whose work calls into question the very ideological notions of efficiency and progress to those reimagining the contemporary tools of industrial production.

The PanLux screening will take place on February 5th in the St. Louis Central Library auditorium. 1301 Olive St, St. Louis, MO 63103
